An artist’s eye view from the rooftop

One of our valued clients, Stour Valley Estates Ltd, has featured me in their recent newsletter. Many of my clients might not realise that I have another passion!

Karl Terry is never happier than when he is outdoors – whether that is refurbishing the roofs of ancient buildings or putting the finishing touches to his landscape paintings. Wind, rain or snow cannot daunt him – he is a true artist and artisan.
Karl followed in his father’s footsteps when he went into roofing straight from school, and has been running his own business, Karl Terry Roofing Contractors, for the past 17 years. The company specialises in Kent Peg tiling and 90% of the work they do is for heritage properties, including those owned by the National Trust. They have won a number of awards for their work on listed and period properties.
Over the years they have become a regular contractor to Tony Skelton of Stour Valley Estates as well as working on some higher profile jobs such as the mansions of both Mohammed Al Fayed and Heather Mills. And once even travelling as far afield as Florence.
"Most recently we worked on the upgrading of the old Greyhound Pub in Sandwich for Tony, which is now re-opened as St Peter's restaurant," explained Karl, "and some of the historic buildings in Palace Street, Canterbury have also benefited from our specialist services. Tony is a great guy to work for – he has very high standards and expectations but is very supportive. He is also very encouraging of my work as a landscape painter – a hobby that I am fanatical about!"
Having been dissuaded from going to art college in favour of a pursuing a more solid trade, it was roofing that finally brought Karl back into contact with his old art teacher at Norton Knatchbull school, Chris Daynes. "It was while I was working on Chris Daynes’s roof in 2005 that he persuaded me to pick up my paintbrush again – and I’ve not put it down since," went on Karl. "Every spare minute I get I’m outside, ‘en plein air’."
And just as Karl has built a company recognised for its skill in a specialist field he is now building commercial success with his art. “My paintings are offered in a number of galleries and I’ve had works accepted in several shows, including The Royal Academy Summer Show and The Royal Society of British Artists Exhibition. Going back to art again has been a revelation to me, I am learning so much about colours and about really appreciating the beauty of our surroundings. I’m so glad I went to do Chris’s roof that day!"
Karl has two websites: http://www.kentpegs.com/ and http://www.karlterry.co.uk/ where you can find out more about either of his passions!
